Hammon on Criticism: It's 'a Free America'

Quote:
As for helping the Russians to a medal, Hammon said the path was more fulfilling than the result. "To me, it was more about the journey than the medal. That medal's going to collect dust just like any other piece of jewelry."

Default Hammon Ready To Lead San Antonio to Big Prize

Quote:
It?s been an eventful summer for Becky Hammon, the focus of so much attention for her decision to play for Russia in the Beijing Olympics. Hammon earned a bronze medal there, but now she?s going for another big prize: a WNBA championship.

Hammon?s San Antonio Silver Stars had the best regular-season record (24-10) in the WNBA and begin their postseason quest tonight at Sacramento.

Default Hammon sparks Silver Stars

Here is the local story. They picked it up from AP but please still click.

Hammon sparks Silver Stars

Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. ? Becky Hammon made six 3-pointers and scored 30 points to give the Silver Stars a 85-78 victory over the Sacramento Monarchs in the opener of the WNBA's Western Conference playoffs on Thursday night.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is Saturday in San Antonio. The Silver Stars posted a league-best 24-10 record in the regular season and were 15-2 at home.

?When my first 3 was a bank shot, I thought this could be a pretty good night,? said Hammon, who was two points shy of her playoff career high.

9. 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China: It's not strictly a WNBA moment, but something I thought I should include. San Antonio Silver Star Becky Hammon had Olympic hopes which were granted during the Games in Beijing, China. Hammon, who can be considered one of the best players in the WNBA, was snubbed by USA basketball for a spot on the Olympic roster (I?m guessing politics plays a big role in player considerations). Hammon decided to play for Russia and make some cash instead. She returned to the states with a bronze medal.
The United States women won gold over Australia in a game most thought would have been more competitive than it actually was. The United States second string had more talent than the entire Australian roster and it showed with a 92-65 victory.

Becky, Books and Basketball

Congratulations are in order for Marie Ferdinand and Silver Stars teammate Shanna Zolman, who both tied the knot recently.

And just this afternoon, Liberty guard Becky Hammon joined Knicks center Malik Rose and NBA Hall-of Famer Bob Lanier at the NBA Store to take part in a reading event with NBA and WNBA partner Penguin Classics. The three star ballers took part in a panel discussion about their favorite books and what makes a classic. The discussion moderated by the head of the New York Public Library, who openly called out Becky for having overdue books, as well as the publisher and president of Penguin. The audience was made up of Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club members.

You may recall that the league joined forces for the 60th Anniversary of Penguin to promote literacy and a greater interest in the classics. Earlier in the summer, Hammon read Arthur Miller's classic The Crucible, a dramatic look at the Salem Witch Trials of the 17th century. The event's theme: "Aim High, Live Classic."

In case you are curious, my most recent favorites have been Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion and, of course, Little Women, which, to my surprise, was not about Becky Hammon at all.

In catching up with Hammon, she just got back from a vacation in Puerto Rico and is both looking into doing college broadcasting this offseason and potentially going over to Europe. She also just moved and has no cable or internet access, which is making her life not so fun these days as she misses reading WNBA.com every day.

Quote:
Last weekend, the Detroit Shock won its third WNBA championship, sweeping the San Antonio Silver Stars in three games.

This put to an end a tumultuous season for one of the truly great stars of world basketball, and one of the most unlikely.

Becky Hammon was an unheralded kid coming out of the state of South Dakota and Colorado State University when she was joined the New York Liberty as a free agent in 2001. She became a fan favorite in New York City with her hustle and her dead-eye shooting before being traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars before the 2007 season.

It was that season in which her true value as a sportswoman was realized. She took the moribund franchise to the Western Conference finals and finished second in WNBA MVP balloting. Despite this, she did not get an invite to the Olympic trials.

So, what did Hammon do? This bible-toting, shark-catching, rattlesnake-eating midwesterner who loves to hunt did something which, 20 years ago, would have been unheard of. She joined Russia?s women?s basketball team.

Despite what many people in the sports world and in today?s ?culture wars? have said, however, I can?t blame Hammon for what she has done. Hammon is 31 years of age and will likely be beyond consideration for London 2012, even for Team Russia. She followed her Olympic dream and got a bronze medal out of it.

Taking all of that experience back to San Antonio, she was lionized as a heroine, especially after her clutch plays in the final seven minutes of the deciding game of the 2008 Western Conference Final against the overwhelmingly talented Los Angeles Sparks.

If you had watch the three games of the series without seeing the last few minutes of each contest, there?s no way you would have envisioned San Antonio winning the series. But Hammon?s stepback jumpers, weaving drives, and inspirational words got the Stars to their first WNBA Finals.

Though the Stars lost, I think Hammon?s play has the attention of her opponents ? and, possibly the higher-ups at USA Basketball.

Old becky Interview from after the acl injury

http://www.wnba.com/liberty/news/che...ky_030801.html

A few weeks after Becky Hammon had surgery to repair her torn ACL, the All-Star sat down with nyliberty.com for some quick insight on the rehabilitation process, her All-Star experience and a few other things.

Nyliberty.com: It?s been just over three weeks since the surgery, how are you holding up?

BH: The surgery went very well. I was a little sore immediately after but the pain has begun to subside a bit. My stitches were taken out on July 30th so I?m on my way to getting better. The doctors are taking things slow to make sure that everything heals correctly.

Nyliberty.com: Was it difficult attending your first game after the injury knowing that you weren?t playing?

BH: It was very hard and frustrating at first, wanting to be on the court with my teammates. But with each passing game and practice, it gets a little easier for me. Now I have the opportunity to learn more about the game from the sidelines to improve for next year and I?m taking advantage of that.

Nyliberty.com: What was your first All-Star experience like? How did you feel receiving such a warm ovation from the fans during the team introductions?

BH: Words really can?t express it, but it was awesome! I really had to contain myself because it was so incredible. The fans were great, as usual, and the All-Star game was planned so nicely. It was a really special day. The players looked like they were having a lot of fun, I just wish I could have been out there with them.

Nyliberty.com: Sue Wicks will be honored on Friday, August 1. What has she meant to you and to the New York Liberty?

BH: Sue is one of my favorite teammates. She is so special because she makes everyone around her better, on and off the court. Sue has done so much for the New York Liberty, not to mention women?s basketball in general. Anyone, who has ever played a team sport, would want her on their team. I miss her but its good to see her at the games rooting us on.

Nyliberty.com: The Eastern Conference has shaped up to be a very competitive and close conference this season. With a month left in the season, what does the team need to do to finish the year off strong?

BH: I think that the biggest thing for us is to stay together ? to play as a team. We also need to get back to playing our game, which is hard-nosed, tough defense and then the offense will follow. We have the skill, talent and confidence for a thrilling comeback and I think we?ll do it.

And while no players have been signed yet, King released his "dream team," which includes former CSU players Becky Hammon and Katie Cronin, but signing Hammon may not be as far off as it sounds. The rights to sign Hammon were part of the purchase package. Hammon, a 5-foot-6 guard who played at CSU from 1995-1999 and still holds many of the school's scoring records, currently plays for the Women's National Basketball Association's New York Liberty. She also played for the NWBL's Tennessee Fury during its regular season this year.

Former Colorado State University basketball standout Teresa (James) Hinz first love is her family, and her second love is basketball, so it's only natural that she wants both. Hinz, 29, is on the list as a possible head coach for the new Colorado Chill women's professional basketball team, but as a firefighter for the Union Colony Fire/ Rescue Authority her profession - and that family -comes first. She isn't sure if anything can be worked out but says it is only right that she put the fire authority first.

But even if Hinz is not able to become the full-time coach, she will participate in some manner because she believes supporting the team is something she needs to do. "When I was growing up in Aurora, I didn't even know women sports existed," she said. "I want my daughter and other young girls to see professional women play." Hinz, who played high school ball at Aurora Hinkley, played for CSU from 1992-1996 and currently shares the record with Becky Hammon for all-time consecutive 20-plus point scoring games at nine. She had 34, 20-plus games in her career at CSU.

The dream team roster for the new Colorado Chill women's professional basketball team came one step closer to reality Friday. General Manager Dave King announced the signings of former Colorado State University standouts Becky Hammon and Katie Cronin.

Yes, if it meant that I was going to get to personal shooting lessons from her. For anything else, absolutely, positively, not.

Year 3 of NWBL League

Quote:
It's pretty much agreed that no one is playing in the NWBL for the money. Twenty-two thousand dollars is divided among each team's top eight draft slots (averaging out to approximately $125 a game for a 22-game season) and lower picks aren't paid.

Then why play?

Four-year WNBA veteran Beck Hammon just completed her first season in the NWBL. She's enjoyed the high level of competition, and the chance to both improve her skills and get in game shape. "You get to go out and play 40 minutes and have a lot of fun," says the New York Liberty guard. "That's part of being intense - you find intensity in playing hard and having fun."

In an effort to attract fans, the distribution of WNBA players to NWBL teams is often dictated by the locale of a team and the regionality of the players. That, in turn, can create an imbalance of talent. The Spirit, Fury and Stealth, for instance, boast four to five top WNBA players, while Grand Rapids, Birmingham and Chicago have two and three.

That's not necessarily fair to the other teams," says Hammon, whose Tennessee team also includes WNBA All-Star Marie Ferdinand. "But on a business side, it's very smart."

Note she was saying "God bless you" back in 2001 - so much for those who say she only recently got her faith.

Hammon Personal Fan Letter
By Becky Hammon, BeckyHammon.com, 12/11/01

First, let me start by saying HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! I am definitely in the holiday spirit, and I’m very excited about this upcoming month. But first I wanted to give a recap summarizing the past two months of my life.

It’s been a very painful couple of months (I’ll get to that in a second), and then it has also been a really busy two months.

So let me take you back to October. It all started the night I had an appearance at Rutgers University. I met some of my most faithful fans (You know who you are! By the way I checked out your website, and I liked it! I especially liked your encounters section. It put a smile on my face). So anyways… of course I felt fine while I was doing the appearance, and on the way home I started feeling a little sick. By the time I got back to my apartment, I started feeling really sick. My body ached all over, and through the course of the night I got a pretty high temperature. By the next morning I felt HORRIBLE, my fever ran around 103 degrees. My head was pounding, and my lower abdomen was killing me. So after two days of this I finally broke my fever, but my abdomen was still hurting pretty bad. So, I waited a few more days. I can be pretty stubborn with myself sometimes, and think I can just fix things myself. However, I decided I better go in to see the doctor, because I knew something was definitely not right.

I decided to go to the doctor and get a blood test done along with some other tests. So the doctor received the results, and said he was a little concerned about some things they found in my blood. The next day, I was at the hospital getting a cat scan/MRI, and they sent me home saying if you feel any pain go to the emergency room. At about 12:30 am, I had a pretty bad pain again, and I headed to the emergency room. I stayed there all night with a needle in my arm (which I really didn’t like). The next morning, after getting checked on by about 4 different doctors, I had to get wheeled up to the surgery unit. And around 10am, almost exactly a week after I felt my first symptoms, I was in surgery… but I’m not going to tell you what for yet.

After that I was out of commission for about a week and a half, couch ridden!!! I hated it. It was the first operation I’d ever had…. and I don’t care to have any others either! I finally started slowly to become more active. Oh, did I mention that I was supposed to be moving all this time too…. Thank God for great friends, who did most of it for me…. and my cousin Ken (who’s an absolute sweetheart) drove a lot of my stuff back to S.D. for me…He’d have to be sweet to do that!!! Actually they were all sweet for doing it for me, because moving is a pain when it’s your own stuff, let alone someone else’s things!!

I finally get back to S.D. after wrapping up a few loose ends, and about three days after I got to S.D., I left for Mexico with my family. This was now three weeks since my operation (any guesses on what it was yet?) Mexico was awesome. I did a lot of swimming and a lot of diving, which is a nice relaxing way to get my body going again. Though, what made my trip is that we saw some awesome things on our dives. I LOVE ADVENTURES and CHALLENGES and our dives were both of those. We saw sea turtles, moray eels, barracuda (I snagged one of those on a pole), spotted eels, sting rays (petted those, be careful though, stay away from the tail), octopus (I caught one of those with my hand), saw huge crabs, and lobsters (I caught those too), but don’t worry I didn’t hurt them. I did let them all go of course, but held onto them long enough to get a good look at ‘em. I saw a few lobsters that should have been walking down 34th street with a leash on them. Hey they were bigger than most dogs that I’ve seen, but not bigger than my TREY boy!!!

What takes the cake though, is when I spotted a 9-foot shark sitting underneath a big corral head, chilling on the sand. It sort of looked like a cave. Keep in mind that the surface of the water is about 75 feet above you and the shark is only about 5 feet in front of you. You are in his world, and you have to respect the power, grace, and beauty of these animals. As you can imagine the adrenaline rush was AWESOME and EXCITING. Then later on that same dive I spotted a six-foot shark cruising around, so my dive partner and I took off after it. This is a diving No-No; never leave the group!!! Oh, well I really wanted to see this shark close up. I knew it was only a nurse shark by its fin structure (being that I love the animal planet station and am fascinated by sharks). By the time we finally caught up to it, we had sprinted under water for about 250 yards, and were using up our oxygen quickly from our rapid breathing. The dive master finally caught up to us, and chuckled at us getting excited over a six-foot shark. He continued to tell us that a few weeks ago he had seen a 16 foot Great Hammerhead shark in that area…. which would be a little TOO much excitement for me to stand!!! I’m just glad he wasn’t around that day!

Okay, now back to the real world in the States. The day I returned from Mexico I had an appearance/signing in R.C. An hour later, I caught a flight out to the east coast to do the Sideline Reporting for the WNIT finals game between UCONN and VANDY. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. But I’m just a rookie in that field, so there’s still soo much to be learned. I’ll be trying it out again, only this time as a color commentator on Dec. 29th for the Triple Crown Classic in Texas. It will also be my first time, so if you email my web site what you think…don’t be too harsh on me =) Please keep in mind that I’m still a rookie.

The month of December will not be slowing down for me either. Along with a few appearances, I have my camps in both Colorado, and S.D., which I’m really looking forward too. I always have fun teaching and working with my campers, and I also have a great camp staff as well.

I’m also looking forward to spending more time with my family before I head overseas. At least that is the plan, but don’t ask where yet…I’ll let you know, when I know. I’ll be ready to go…. I really miss playing in games and stuff already, so while I workout I try and make up competitive games for myself. Everyday I try and beat my scores from the previous day. I guess I just make up my own games, since I can’t play in them yet.

So have you guessed my illness yet…it was appendicitis! I had to get my appendix taken out. They cut my lower abs, so coughing, sneezing, and laughing hurt for a good 3-4 weeks after the surgery. And since I love to laugh, I was in pain all the time!!

One last thing, I wanted to apologize in advance if some of you have written or sent me things to sign.I lost track of a lot of things during my move, (which I wasn’t moving or packing myself), so some things have gotten lost, misplaced, etc. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Oh, one more last thing (I promise this really is the last thing). I’ve been receiving some mail and emails with people asking me if I go on line and do instant messaging. I want to make this very clear…IT’S NOT ME! So, if someone is claiming that they are me…IT’S NOT ME. Was that clear enough…great, so now you all know!! IT’S NOT ME!!

Have a Very Happy Holiday, and may God bless you and yours this Christmas!!!!!

Hammon and Malone enter 'The Hall'

Basketball legend Becky Hammon and Olympic discus thrower Casey Malone topped the list of 2004 inductees into the CSU Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Friday night at the University Park Holiday Inn, 425 W. Prospect Rd., in Fort Collins.

Thrower Shelly Borman, basketball great Stan Albert, football defensive end Sean Moran and wrestler Dan Sniff also joined the illustrious list of 90 former CSU student-athletes who are in the Hall of Fame.

Hammon, who plays for the WNBA's New York Liberty and the American Basketball League's Colorado Chill, was a two-time All-American when she played for the Rams from 1995 to 1999. Averaging 21.9 points per game, Hammon is the all-time leading points per game scorer in the Western Athletic Conference, men's or women's.

Hammon, a 5-foot-6-inch guard, owns nearly all the women's basketball records at CSU, including total points (2,740), points per game (21.9), assists (538), steals (315), 3-point field goals made (365), field goals made (918) and free throws made (539).

"I had an outstanding time at CSU and it has carried me on through my professional career," Hammon said. "It is such a humbling experience to be here with such great athletes and great people."

Hammon guided the Rams to two NCAA Tournament appearances and help raise the attendance at Moby Arena from a few hundred per game in the early 1990s to around 2,000 per game during her tenure.

"We (Hammon and teammate Katie Cronin) had a plan to take this program to another level," Hammon said. "It was our goal to pack Moby."
