The message from Galatasaray's new signing from the Czech Republic, Ivana Vecerova, is straight and to the point.

"The EuroLeague (Women) is really difficult," said Vecerova, a Czech international who spent last season with Ros Casares in Spain.

"You already have one (Turkish) league game every week and you also have the European game.

"Many exhausting journeys are taken. All the EuroLeague teams are strong."

Vecerova and her new team-mates, who captured last season's EuroCup Women, will get a sneak preview of life in the EuroLeague when they travel to face three-time defending champions Spartak Moscow Region in the inaugural SuperCup in Vidnoje, Russia, on October 20.

Though Spartak didn't take the Russian title last season, falling to UMMC Ekaterinburg, they did win the EuroLeague while boasting the Team USA trio Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Sylvia Fowles and Australia's Lauren Jackson.

The rich got richer this summer.

While Galatasaray got Vecerova and former UMMC center Yelena Leuchanka of Belarus, star-laden Spartak signed 2007 FIBA Europe Women's Player of the Year Anete Jekabsone-Zogota of Latvia and Russia international Ilona Korstin.

When people in the crowd at the Supercup watch Spartak, they will see former enemies now in their team because Jekabsone played at Dynamo Moscow and Korstin at CSKA Moscow.

Korstin, in fact, spent many years at CSKA but with the club enduring sponsorship problems and facing an uncertain year, she left for Spartak.

"At CSKA, who were two years ago called VBM SGAU (Samara), I spent six memorable seasons," Korstin said.

"It was at this club I was a multiple champion of Russia and the EuroLeague. In my memory will forever remain these triumphant moments.

"But the objectives of the army club (CSKA) for the new, upcoming, season did not coincide with my ambitions, so our paths, unfortunately, differed. That stage of my career ended and the next stage begins."

Most important for Korstin is that Spartak will contend for titles, and that Spartak supporters treat her like one of their own.

"Fans of Spartak have accepted me without prejudice," she said.

Birdy said she will take a time to rest for 1 month and she will be back playing on December with Spartak. Sylvia is still injured, the same situation with LJ. I don't know about Dee.

It looks like Spartak will be playing without their starters from last season.

Here is their roster from the FIBA site, without LJ, Bird and DT or Fowles.

They are still pretty stacked. I would guess some will have to be cut when the above players report because they have 15 players listed.

Early knockout as Spartak beat Galatasaray in SuperCup Women

Spartak Moscow Region hammered Galatasaray 92-59 in the inaugural SuperCup Women on Tuesday in Vidnoje.

Without their trio of superstars Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, three-time defending EuroLeague Women champions Spartak still had far too many weapons for a Galatasaray outfit that played in this game after winning last season's EuroCup Women.

New Spartak Moscow Region signing Ilona Korstin, who had 14 points, four rebounds and three steals, was voted MVP of the event.

The game was effectively over by half-time.

Janel McCarville, Korstin's former teammate at the now defunct CSKA Moscow, had 11 first-half points and big summer signing Anete Jekabsone-Zogota contributed nine of her 16 before the break as the three-time EuroLeague Women champions built a 48-23 lead.

The Russian giants cruised the rest of the way.

Taurasi, the MVP of the EuroLeague Women Final Four earlier this year who only just captured WNBA MVP honors and led the Phoenix Mercury to their second league crown in three years, did attend Tuesday's game.

Play was stopped midway through the fourth quarter and Taurasi was recognized at midcourt before going giving hugs to various Spartak employees and teammates.

Spartak are aiming for an unprecedented fourth EuroLeague Women crown this season while Galatasaray will also be taking part in the competition.

The EuroLeague Women tips off on October 28, with Spartak hosting Frisco Sika Brno in Group D and Galatasaray at home for a Group A game against Cras Basket Taranto - the team they beat in last year's EuroCup Women Final.

I wasn't expecting to beat Spartak, but I wasn't expectin a score like this. I just wanted to see my Gala fight as they always do! But, we didn't fight I'm not used to it It's obvious that we aren't ready for the Euroleague and for the Turkish league. I wonder who will be our next player hopefully, it'll be Katie Douglas

I wouldn't put too much into this one game. Spartak and UMMC are so stacked it's going to be tough for any team. I think once you get into Euroleague play with other teams that don't have unlimited budgets you will compete.

yea, you are rite but, I wasn't talkin just for this game, we really need to improve. I really don't care about the scores as along as we play as a team. tonight there was nothing that gave us hope

Thanks. Those are good numbers. I would like to see how she progress in the 3 months she is with Spartak. It would be very nice if SASS can keep Edwige next season.
